UC Davis Faculty Members Recognized as AAAS Fellows

Ten faculty members from UC Davis have been elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the society announced today. The new fellows have been recognized for their achievements in science, including research, teaching, administration, and science communication.

Among the newly elected fellows is Brad Barber, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Graduate School of Management, who was honored for his contributions to the field of behavioral finance. Andreas Bäumler, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, was recognized for his pioneering work on the regulation of the composition and function of our microflora.

Louise Berben, a Professor in the Department of Chemistry, was acknowledged for her innovative research in molecular inorganic chemistry with applications in solar energy conversion and catalysis. Siobhan Brady, a Professor in the Department of Plant Biology, was recognized for her contributions to plant biology and her service to enhance inclusivity in the plant sciences.

Chen-Nee Chuah, a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was honored for his contributions to the field of communication networks. Ozcan Gulacar, a Professor of Teaching in the Department of Chemistry, was recognized for his service to education in the chemistry discipline.

Emanual Maverakis, a Professor in the Department of Dermatology, was acknowledged for his contributions to diagnostic and treatment guidelines for immune-mediated skin diseases. Luis Fernando Santana, a Professor and Chair in the Department of Physiology and Membrane Biology, was recognized for his work on calcium channel signaling in muscle excitability.

Renee Tsolis, a Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, was honored for her contributions to the field of host-pathogen interactions and advocacy of diversity and inclusion. Mariel Vázquez, a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, was recognized for her contributions at the interface of mathematics, topology, and molecular biology.

The 150th anniversary of the AAAS Fellows program will be celebrated with a gala event in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 21 during the annual Fellows Forum. AAAS, founded in 1848, is the world's largest general scientific society with a mission to "advance science and serve society" through various initiatives in science policy, international programs, science education, and public engagement.
