California is leading a statewide campaign to support students in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and has extended the application deadline for state financial aid programs to May 2, 2024. Governor Gavin Newsom has emphasized the importance of financial aid in making college more accessible and supporting student success. The Governor highlighted the state's outreach efforts to ensure students have the opportunity to access financial aid by participating in workshops and other resources provided across the state.

In a letter issued by Governor Newsom, he expressed California's commitment to helping students pursue their college dreams. The letter emphasized the significance of timely submission of the FAFSA to unlock federal, state, and institutional aid for students. The extension of the application deadline for state financial aid programs from April 2 to May 2 aims to assist students impacted by challenges in the federal rollout of changes to the FAFSA this year.

Students bound for four-year institutions are urged to complete the FAFSA or the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) by the May 2 priority deadline to be eligible for various state financial aid programs such as the Cal Grant and Middle Class Scholarship. Community college students and foster youth have a deadline of September 3, 2024, to submit their applications for financial aid.

Governor Newsom reiterated the state's collaboration with local partners to provide financial aid workshops for students, counselors, and the community. The workshops aim to offer support, outreach, and training to ensure students and their families can access crucial opportunities for college success.

The Governor's letter and outreach efforts underscore California's dedication to helping future leaders and innovators achieve their higher education goals. By extending the financial aid application deadline and organizing workshops, the state is working to ensure that students do not miss out on essential financial aid opportunities for their college education.
