Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences following the passing of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Jonathan Stewart, who tragically died on April 27, 2024, at the South Los Angeles Sheriff’s Station. In a statement, Governor Newsom said, “Deputy Stewart’s service to the people of Los Angeles will always be remembered. During this time of mourning, Jennifer and I send our sincere condolences to his family and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”

Deputy Stewart, 41, began his career with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2006 as a custody assistant before graduating from the academy a year later. His dedication to duty was evident as he rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a Field Training Officer in 2020. He leaves behind his mother, wife, and three children.

As a mark of respect for Deputy Stewart's service and sacrifice, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff in his honor.
