Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis has issued a proclamation declaring September 1, 2025, as Labor Day in California. The proclamation acknowledges the contributions of workers across the state and highlights recent actions taken to support and protect the workforce.

“On Labor Day, we recognize and thank all the working people who sustain our state and nation and fuel our prosperity,” the proclamation states.

The document notes that California has implemented measures aimed at improving conditions for workers. These include protecting warehouse employees from unsafe quotas, ending exploitative pay practices in the garment industry, providing fast-food workers with input on workplace standards, and ensuring fair wages for workers with disabilities.

Kounalakis also referenced initiatives under the Newsom Administration focused on job access and income inequality. “Working to expand access to good jobs and tackle income inequality, the Newsom Administration has released a plan to dramatically expand apprenticeship programs in California, creating more opportunities for people of all backgrounds to earn as they develop valuable skills and experience for the jobs of tomorrow,” she said.

Additionally, California recently launched a Master Plan for Career Education designed to prioritize hands-on learning. This plan aims to strengthen pathways toward high-paying careers that do not necessarily require a college degree.

“California is committed to building an economy that works for working people. This Labor Day and every day, we continue our work to expand access to good jobs, secure safe and healthy workplaces, and create new pathways for upward mobility. Together, we can deliver the promise of Labor Day to all hardworking Californians and their families,” Kounalakis added.

The proclamation was signed by Acting Governor Eleni Kounalakis on August 28, 2025. Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber attested the document.
