Alaska Airlines announced on Apr. 19 a new initiative allowing Mileage Plan members to earn elite-qualifying miles by contributing funds toward sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) purchases during Earth Month. The program, available throughout April, is designed to encourage customer involvement in reducing aviation emissions while providing an alternative way to advance within the airline’s loyalty program.
The initiative links environmental action with tangible rewards for travelers, addressing both the high cost of SAF and the need for greater passenger engagement in sustainability efforts. Sustainable aviation fuel is seen as a key solution for lowering carbon emissions from air travel, but its production remains limited and expensive.
Passengers can use Alaska Airlines’ online platform to contribute financially toward SAF purchases and receive elite-qualifying miles that count toward Mileage Plan status tiers. This structure allows customers to progress within the loyalty program without necessarily increasing their flight activity. According to Alaska Airlines, “For a limited time, Atmos Rewards members can earn 3 status points for every $1 spent on any combination of SAF contributions through Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines between March 23, 2026 and April 30, 2026. Members can earn up to a maximum of 10,000 status points on any combination of SAF contributions through Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines between January 1, 2026 and December 31, 2026.” The airline said passengers have the opportunity to earn three status points through the end of the month.
Sustainable aviation fuel is derived from renewable or waste-based feedstocks and offers significant lifecycle emission reductions compared with conventional jet fuel. Despite these benefits, global supply remains low. Many airlines have launched SAF initiatives focused mainly on corporate partnerships; Alaska’s move extends such programs directly to frequent flyers and individual travelers.
Alaska Airlines has previously outlined long-term goals such as achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 through fleet renewal and increased use of sustainable fuels. Programs like this one involving direct passenger participation add another dimension by raising awareness about traveler roles in climate action.
