Ami Bera, M.D., U.S. Congressman representing California’s 6th district since 2013, has recently addressed two key issues in a series of posts on his official Twitter account: the aftermath of a terrorist attack in Sydney and ongoing efforts to extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies.
On December 15, 2025, Bera wrote about Hanukkah celebrations and expressed concern for victims of violence abroad. “As our Jewish neighbors in Sacramento County gather to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, Janine and I are praying for the families grieving loved ones and for the full recovery of those injured in the terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community in Sydney, Australia.”
Later that day, he turned his attention to domestic health care policy. “Over 20 million Americans will see their health care costs dramatically increase if Affordable Care Act subsidies are not extended. I have joined all of my Democratic colleagues in signing a discharge petition to force a vote on extending these subsidies for three years.”
On December 16, Bera reiterated this message and highlighted bipartisan cooperation as essential. “Every single House Democrat has signed a discharge petition to force a vote on extending ACA subsidies. We only need FOUR Republicans to stand up to Speaker Johnson and join us in protecting access to affordable, quality health care for over 20 million Americans.”
The issue at stake is the extension of federal subsidies under the Affordable Care Act—a program that helps millions afford health insurance coverage. Without an extension by Congress, many could face significant increases in premiums or lose coverage altogether.
Bera was born in Los Angeles in 1965 and currently resides in Elk Grove. He earned his Bachelor of Science from University of California, Irvine in 1987.
