Ami Bera, M.D., U.S. Congressman representing California’s 6th district since 2013, addressed recent developments in Sacramento through a series of social media posts. On July 17 and 18, 2025, Bera commented on immigration enforcement actions and the shutdown of a crisis lifeline for LGBTQ youth.
On July 17, Bera posted his reaction to federal immigration activity in Sacramento: “My statement on the ICE raids carried out today in Sacramento.” The following day, he expanded on reports regarding law enforcement behavior: “Reports of masked ICE and Border Patrol agents approaching and arresting individuals in Sacramento are scary and disturbing.
There’s an important distinction between going after individuals with serious criminal warrants and detaining people outside a Home Depot who are simply” (July 18, 2025).
Later that same day, Bera criticized the closure of support services for LGBTQ youth: “Shutting down the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline for LGBTQ youth is cruel.
As a doctor, I know how vital it is for young people—especially LGBTQ youth—to have someone to talk to in a moment of crisis.
I’m proud to see California once again stepping up and leading the way forward.” (July 18, 2025).
Ami Bera was born in Los Angeles in 1965 and currently resides in Elk Grove. He earned his BS from the University of California, Irvine in 1987. Before being elected to Congress in 2013—replacing Dan Lungren—he worked as a physician.
