Ami Bera, M.D., currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing California’s 6th district, has been vocal on social media about healthcare issues in California. His recent tweets criticize legislative efforts he believes threaten healthcare access for Californians.
On July 2, 2025, Bera expressed his concerns regarding a legislative proposal dubbed the “Big Ugly Bill” by Donald Trump. He stated, “As a doctor, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made in California to expand health care and move closer to universal coverage.” He warned that the bill could potentially reverse these advancements by affecting over two million residents.
Continuing his critique on July 3, 2025, Bera tweeted about his stance on the bill while at work in Congress. He announced, “I’m back on the House floor and just voted NO on advancing Donald Trump’s ‘Big Ugly Bill.'” He assured that House Democrats are committed to protecting Americans’ healthcare and food assistance from what he described as detrimental cuts.
Later that day, Bera supported statements made by fellow Representative Hakeem Jeffries regarding Medicaid’s importance. In his tweet, he emphasized its significance for vulnerable groups across Sacramento County and nationwide. He asserted that “.@RepJeffries hits the nail on the head.” and reiterated that Democrats remain united against this legislation.
Bera has been a congressional representative since 2013 after succeeding Dan Lungren. Born in Los Angeles in 1965, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Irvine.
