Ami Bera, M.D., who has represented California’s 6th District in the U.S. Congress since 2013, recently addressed several issues impacting his constituents in a series of posts on social media. The topics ranged from federal budget cuts affecting food assistance programs to concerns over mass layoffs at the State Department and local efforts to combat homelessness.
On July 10, 2025, Bera highlighted the potential impact of proposed federal spending reductions on food assistance programs. He stated that “The devastating cuts in President Trump’s ‘Big Ugly Bill’ put food assistance at risk for thousands of Sacramento County residents—including seniors.” Bera also mentioned his meeting with Meals on Wheels staff to discuss collaborative solutions aimed at preventing hunger among seniors in the community.
The following day, July 11, 2025, Bera commented on recent workforce reductions at the State Department. He wrote that “I’ve worked closely with the dedicated professionals at the State Department. These are patriots who’ve spent their careers serving our nation and keeping us safe… Mass layoffs like this further undermine our national security and global leadership.” Bera expressed concern about losing experienced personnel vital to national security.
Later on July 11, Bera turned attention to housing insecurity in Sacramento. He remarked that “Shelter is essential. Until folks have a safe place to sleep, it’s hard for them to start putting their lives back together.” He praised Northview Pointe in Natomas for providing “66 furnished studio units for previously homeless individuals,” along with onsite behavioral support services.
Ami Bera was born in Los Angeles in 1965 and currently resides in Elk Grove. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Irvine in 1987 and succeeded Dan Lungren as representative for California’s 6th district.
