Ami Bera, M.D., a member of the U.S. Congress representing California’s 6th district since 2013, recently used his social media platform to highlight issues ranging from healthcare staffing shortages to national economic policy and Social Security.
On August 13, 2025, Bera addressed staffing challenges at a key veterans’ health facility, stating, “NEWS: The independent watchdog for @DeptVetAffairs has identified severe staffing shortages at the VA Northern California Health Care System in Mather. Most are direct care providers including nurses, doctors and specialists in critical areas like mental health, surgery, cancer”. This statement comes amid ongoing concerns about adequate medical care for veterans.
Later that day on August 13, Bera commented on former President Donald Trump’s economic policies with regard to tariffs. He wrote, “Donald Trump promised to lower costs. His tariffs do the opposite. They are a tax on hardworking Americans.” Tariffs imposed during the Trump administration have been widely debated for their impact on consumer prices.
On August 15, Bera discussed Social Security’s role in supporting retirees after decades of work and contributions: “Social Security is a promise. After a lifetime of hard work and paying into the program, Americans earn the dignity of a secure retirement. For 90 years, it has delivered on that promise for millions, including more than 127,000 CA-06 residents who currently receive Social”.
Bera was born in Los Angeles in 1965 and currently resides in Elk Grove. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Irvine in 1987. Since replacing Dan Lungren in Congress over a decade ago, he has focused on healthcare access and economic security as part of his legislative agenda.
