Amyis Coogler was sentenced on May 8 to 40 years to life in prison for the second-degree murder of Corey Shearer. The sentencing followed a jury conviction on March 19, which also found that Coogler personally discharged a firearm causing death.

The case stems from an incident on August 5, 2022, when Sacramento sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a house party. Deputies found the victim, Corey Shearer, lying on the lawn with four gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

Witnesses at the scene provided authorities with a description of the shooter who had fled after the incident. Investigators reviewed video footage that showed Coogler hiding in a neighbor’s backyard shortly after the shooting occurred. DNA evidence collected from items at the scene matched Coogler and included a firearm determined by investigators to have been used in the crime.

Deputy District Attorney Celeena Winston prosecuted the case in front of Judge Ernest Sawtelle. The sentence reflects both the jury’s findings and additional evidence presented during trial proceedings.

The conclusion of this case brings closure following nearly four years since Shearer’s death.
