Law enforcement agencies from across San Diego County honored officers who died in the line of duty during the annual Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony, held May 6 at Waterfront Park. The event included the addition of Officer Lauren Craven’s name to the Wall of Light, marking La Mesa Police Department’s first on-duty death last October.
The ceremony is part of a tradition to remember and support families, colleagues, and friends of fallen officers. This year’s theme was “A Time to Remember.” Throughout May, the Wall of Light shines blue in recognition of National Law Enforcement Month. During the event, all fallen officers’ names were read aloud. Traditions such as a riderless horse procession, three seats of honor for fallen officers, a three-volley salute, a water salute at San Diego Harbor, mounted patrols from multiple agencies and bagpipe performances took place. Families were also able to make rubbings of their loved ones’ names from the memorial.
La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney said: “May we never become so accustomed to safety that we forget who makes it possible.”
For those unable to attend in person, an online memorial lists all regional fallen officers’ names.
San Diego County Government supports historic preservation and community development through various boards and initiatives; it delivers essential services focused on public safety among other areas; manages regional airports through its aviation department; serves residents across urban, rural, mountain and desert regions; and its Board of Supervisors provides legislative leadership with Sarah Aghassi serving as interim chief administrative officer—all according to the official website.
The annual ceremony reflects ongoing efforts by local government and law enforcement agencies to recognize sacrifices made by public safety personnel.
