California Attorney General Rob Bonta has responded to a recent post by former President Donald Trump on Truth Social regarding the U.S. Census. In his statement, Bonta referenced actions taken during Trump’s first term that sought to limit the scope of the 2020 Census.
“During his first term, President Trump tried to prevent a complete and accurate 2020 Census count from taking place. My office took a leadership role in holding him accountable — we sued and were able to block that unlawful effort by the President. In the process, we ensured that California received both the Congressional representation and federal funding we were entitled to. We will be keeping a close eye on the Administration’s actions. Let there be no doubt: If necessary, we are prepared to take legal action once again. The U.S. Constitution mandates that all individuals — regardless of legal status — be counted. It’s not an option,” Bonta said.
Bonta emphasized that California previously took legal steps to ensure everyone was counted in the 2020 Census, which affected both congressional representation and federal funding for the state.
The Attorney General also stated that his office is monitoring current developments closely and signaled readiness to pursue further legal action if similar attempts are made against a full census count.
