A federal grand jury has indicted Stanislav Yelizarov, 35, an inmate at United States Penitentiary, Atwater, for threatening the family of a federal official. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Eric Grant.
Court documents show that Yelizarov had previously been convicted in the District of Maryland and was involved in ongoing proceedings there as well as in the Fourth Circuit. The Assistant U.S. Attorney from the District of Maryland served as the prosecutor in those cases.
On March 23, 2024, while using a recorded prison telephone line, Yelizarov communicated a threat to the Assistant U.S. Attorney stating his intent to kill the prosecutor’s “whole family.” Prior to this incident, he had sent threatening letters to the same prosecutor.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Federal Bureau of Prisons led the investigation into this matter, with support from the U.S. Marshals Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Veneman-Hughes of the Eastern District of California. The offices for both the District of Maryland and Eastern District of Virginia provided assistance.
“If convicted, Yelizarov faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Any sentence, however, would be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables. The charges are only allegations; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”
