Congressman Brad Sherman, representing California’s 32nd district since 1997, recently addressed concerns regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment capabilities through a series of tweets. Sherman’s insights focus on the potential threat posed by Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and the geopolitical implications surrounding it.
On June 22, 2025, Sherman expressed concern over Iran’s stockpile of 60% enriched uranium, stating that it “probably survived and is immediately dangerous.” He emphasized that if Iran can “salvage or reconstruct even a small portion of its enrichment capacity,” this stockpile could be converted into enough weapons-grade uranium for approximately nine bombs. “Iran’s stockpile of 60% enriched uranium probably survived and is immediately dangerous. If Iran can salvage or reconstruct even a small portion of its enrichment capacity, it can turn this stockpile into enough weapons-grade uranium for roughly 9 bombs.”
In another tweet posted at the same time, Sherman discussed an attack on Fordow and other sites in Iran which nearly destroyed their ability to enrich uranium in the future. However, he noted that “#Iran already has stockpiled enough near-weapons grade uranium for about 9 bombs,” stressing that “only coercive diplomacy can eliminate that immediate threat.” He also questioned what actions Israel might take in response to this situation. “The attack on #Fordow and other sites nearly destroyed Iran’s ability to enrich uranium in the future. But #Iran already has stockpiled enough near-weapons grade uranium for about 9 bombs.”
Later that day, Sherman further elaborated on the danger posed by Iran’s highly enriched uranium. He reiterated that it’s sufficient for about nine bombs when further enriched to over 90%, reaching weapons-grade status. According to experts consulted by Sherman, if Iran retains or reconstitutes just 12% of its previous enrichment capability, significant risks remain present.“So how dangerous is the stockpile of 60% highly enriched uranium that #Iran had yesterday and probably still retains? It’s enough for about 9 bombs when enriched to over 90%, weapons-grade.”
Sherman was born in Los Angeles in 1954 and currently resides in Sherman Oaks. A graduate from UCLA with a BA earned in 1974 and a JD from Harvard University obtained in 1979, he has served his congressional district since succeeding Anthony Beilenson.
