California’s track and field team has appointed Tyler Burdorff as the new assistant coach for the throws unit. Robyne Johnson, Director of Cross Country/Track & Field, announced the addition to the Golden Bears’ staff. Burdorff comes from Maryland, where he coached for four years in the Big Ten Conference.
“We are delighted to announce Tyler as our new assistant coach for Cal throws,” said Johnson. “Tyler stood out during the interview process, not only for his coaching acumen but also for the bond he has forged with his student-athletes and his unwavering commitment to helping them grow, both competitively and personally.”
During his tenure at Maryland (2022-25), Burdorff coached javelin throwers Kayla Thorpe and Mekhi Abbott to national records. He also produced two Second-Team All-Americans and several NCAA first round qualifiers.
Burdorff began his Division I coaching career at Towson, achieving significant milestones including an outdoor shot put school record. His initial full-time role was at Ithaca College, where he led the throws program from 2019-20.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and pre-physical therapy from Baldwin Wallace and is certified by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as a Throws Event Specialist.
Burdorff replaces Mohamad Saatara, who left after 12 years with Cal. “I am extremely excited to join Robyne Johnson and her staff here at Cal,” said Burdorff. “There is a rich history of track & field in California… I couldn’t be more thrilled to be a part of it.”
