The California men’s basketball team achieved its eighth consecutive win, defeating Columbia 74-56 at Haas Pavilion. With this victory, the Bears improved their season record to 12-1 and maintained an undefeated home streak. Columbia’s record now stands at 9-3.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, with Cal leading 28-16 at halftime. The Bears shot 25 percent from the field, while Columbia managed 25.9 percent. Dai Dai Ames was the only player to reach double figures by halftime, scoring 12 points.
Cal initiated a significant run in the first half, sparked by a steal and dunk from Ames that contributed to a 13-0 rally. The Bears capitalized on free throws during a dry spell late in the half and entered halftime with a comfortable lead.
Columbia narrowed the gap early in the second half but could not overtake Cal. Key plays included threes from John Camden and Justin Pippen, as well as another strong performance from Ames, who finished with 21 points—his sixth game this season scoring at least 20 points. Camden also scored in double figures for his eleventh time this season with 15 points.
Lee Dort set career highs with four blocks and fourteen rebounds. Chris Bell added twelve points for his tenth double-digit game of the year.
This latest win gives Cal its best start since the 1959-60 season when it finished as national runner-up after going 28-1 before falling in the championship game. The team has matched its longest winning streak since recording nine straight victories during the 2008-09 season.
Cal is scheduled to begin ACC play against nationally ranked Louisville on December 30 at Haas Pavilion, followed by a matchup with Georgia Tech on January 2.
According to team statistics, Cal remains unbeaten (12-0) when holding opponents to seventy-two or fewer points.
