The Cal Poly beach volleyball team defeated Grand Canyon University 3-0 on May 1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship.
The victory allows Cal Poly, ranked sixth, to continue its run in the national tournament and face third-ranked UCLA in the next round. The match took place at Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Julia Westby and Elise Lenahan secured the first point for Cal Poly with a straight-set win at the No. 4 position. Ella Connor and Erin Inskeep followed with another straight-set victory at No. 1, putting Cal Poly ahead by two points. The deciding point came from Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter at No. 2, who won their third set 15-10.
Westby and Lenahan improved their season record as a pair to 29-3, while Connor and Inskeep moved to 32-5. Martinez and Walter now have an NCAA-leading record of 35-3 as a duo this year.
Cal Poly is scheduled to play UCLA in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning, with coverage available on ESPN2 and ESPN+. The winner will move forward to compete in Saturday’s semifinal match against either Texas or Loyola Marymount University.
The outcome of these matches will determine which teams progress further toward claiming this year’s NCAA championship title.
