Three Cal Poly Mustangs golfers placed in the top 15 at the Big West Championship, as the team secured a runner-up finish on May 5—their best result in a decade and highest under sixth-year head coach Phil Rowe.
The tournament was held at La Quinta Country Club, where freshmen Rafael Bobo-Lloret and Zihao Wang led Cal Poly by tying for 10th place. Both finished with three-round scores of two-under-par 214. The Mustangs’ total score of one-under-par 863 marked their third lowest team score this season and their highest placement in the conference championship since finishing second in 2016.
Long Beach State, ranked twenty-eighth nationally, won its fourth consecutive Big West title with a record-breaking team score of forty-eight-under-par 816. This surpassed the previous championship record of twenty-two-under.
Bobo-Lloret, who was named February’s Big West Golfer of the Month, closed out his tournament with a two-under-par round that included four birdies. Wang climbed ten spots on the final day after carding six birdies for a three-under-par round, earning his first collegiate top-10 finish.
Junior Jack Jarvis finished fifteenth overall with an even-par total of 216. Graduate student Kyle Dougherty recorded four birdies but ended up twenty-third at four-over-par 220. Sophomore Nolan Kuszyk placed twenty-ninth with six-over-par 222.
The strong showing highlights continued progress for Cal Poly men’s golf under Rowe’s leadership.
