The Cal Poly softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Long Beach State on April 18, as the Mustangs marked the retirement of Lisa Modglin’s No. 22 jersey.

The event was significant for the program, with Modglin being recognized for her achievements as a former All-America selection and record holder in several offensive categories at Cal Poly. Her jersey is now one of only two retired at Bob Janssen Field.

In the first game, Long Beach State took an early lead with four runs in the opening inning and ultimately won 6-1. Audree Mendoza contributed an RBI sacrifice fly for The Beach, while Isabella Alonso retired Cal Poly’s first six hitters before Kiara Blanchard singled in the third inning. Maddy Bermudez later doubled to drive in Cal Poly’s only run of that game. Freshman pitcher Kaylee Davis struck out three batters over seven innings but allowed two more runs in the seventh.

The second game saw Long Beach State again take control early with three runs in the first inning, including a two-run double by Nina Sepulveda. Lindsey Cowans retired eight straight Mustang batters before Maya Venegas reached base on an error and Myleigh Cooper singled during Cal Poly’s best scoring chance in the fourth inning. Jailynn Banda closed out that threat and helped keep Cal Poly scoreless as The Beach secured a 7-0 victory.

Cooper led Cal Poly offensively in game two with two hits, but overall, the Mustangs struggled to bring runners home throughout both contests.
