Cal Poly’s softball team split a doubleheader against UC Davis on May 1, opening their final series of the 2026 season. The Mustangs secured a decisive 12-4 win in five innings during the second game after falling in an extended 11-inning opener, 3-2.
The games were significant as they marked Cal Poly’s last home series of the year and featured standout performances from several players. In the second game, freshman Madi Bohannon, sophomore Maya Venegas, and senior Kiara Blanchard each hit home runs in successive innings to help lift Cal Poly to victory. Blanchard drove in five runs, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning that contributed to her career high for RBIs.
The Mustangs’ offense was strong throughout game two, scoring five runs in the second inning and recording a season-high for total runs. All but one starter contributed to Cal Poly’s total of thirteen hits. Freshman first baseman Myleigh Cooper added an RBI single during the rally while sophomore Sienna Erskine ended the contest with a bases-loaded single.
In contrast, Friday’s opening game saw Cal Poly lose its longest contest since April 2019. After eleven innings, UC Davis prevailed when Gia Felice broke a tie with an RBI single. Despite solid relief pitching from sophomore Bree Brennan and timely hitting by junior center fielder A’Niyla Byrd late in regulation play, Cal Poly could not secure a win.
With this split result and having been previously eliminated from postseason contention for the Big West Championship scheduled for May 6-9, Cal Poly will conclude its season on Friday afternoon against UC Davis.
