Eleven former and current California water polo athletes are set to participate in the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, beginning later this week.
On the women’s side, seven athletes will compete. These include alumnae Isabel Williams (USA), Cecily Turner (Great Britain), Cassidy Ball (Great Britain), and Kitty Lynn Joustra (The Netherlands). Current players Julia Bonaguidi (USA), Eszter Varro (Hungary), and Holly Dunn (New Zealand) will also represent their countries.
In men’s competition, alumni Adrian Weinberg (USA), Nikolaos Papanikolaou (Greece), Lazar Andric (Montenegro), and current student-athlete Dominic Brown (USA) will participate.
The tournament kicks off Thursday with the women’s games. The United States will face China, while The Netherlands competes against Argentina in Group B. Great Britain takes on France in Group D.
Women’s matches continue Friday as New Zealand plays Italy in Group A, and Hungary faces Greece in Group C. Men’s group play begins with the USA meeting Canada in Group C on Friday. Montenegro and Greece will compete in Group D on Saturday.
Group matches run through July 18 before the round of 16 starts. The gold-medal games are scheduled for July 23 for women and July 24 for men.
Joustra is making her fifth appearance at the World Championships. She is a two-time Olympian and three-time All-American at Cal. Weinberg, a three-time NCAA champion for the Bears and two-time All-American, is entering his fourth World Championships after debuting for Team USA last summer in Paris.
