The California Chamber of Commerce has started a statewide campaign to encourage state officials to support the growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector in California. The campaign includes digital advertisements and videos that will be distributed across media platforms and public locations as lawmakers finish their legislative session for the year.
According to CalChamber, the goal is to emphasize the need for regulations that help rather than hinder AI innovation. “We want California’s elected officials to work with us in helping ensure our state continues to be where the story of AI’s exciting future is written for years to come,” said Jennifer Barrera, President and Chief Executive Officer of CalChamber. “It’s important to avoid imposing any uneven, only-in-California regulations that will make it harder for us to compete.”
California currently hosts 32 out of the world’s top 50 AI companies. Early data suggests that 2025 could mark a significant year for AI startups, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. Venture capital investments in AI startups reached $74.6 billion during the first half of 2025, more than three times what was committed during the same period in 2024, according to The Washington Post.
The campaign argues that maintaining California’s leadership position depends on avoiding over-regulation that could hurt competitiveness. It also states that AI technology can drive progress and address complex problems if allowed to develop under a balanced regulatory approach.
CalChamber warns that too many restrictions may prompt companies based in California to relocate, which could mean losing billions in economic opportunities for the state.
