California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the California Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating two separate officer-involved shootings that occurred in Southern California on December 31, 2025. The investigations are being conducted under Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), which requires independent review of certain police shootings.
The first incident took place in Fontana at approximately 1:36 p.m. and involved personnel from the Fontana Police Department. One civilian died as a result. The second shooting happened in San Pedro at around 9:40 p.m., involving officers from the Los Angeles Police Department, and also resulted in one civilian death.
“Following notification of these incidents, DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team initiated an investigation of each in accordance with AB 1506 mandates. Upon completion of the investigations, they will be turned over to DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review.
