California DOJ investigates fatal officer-involved shooting involving Escondido police

The California Department of Justice has opened an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that took place in San Diego on August 29, 2025. The incident, which involved the Escondido Police Department, resulted in the death of one individual.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated, “The California Department of Justice (DOJ), pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), is investigating and will independently review an officer-involved shooting (OIS) that occurred in San Diego, California on Friday, August 29, 2025 at approximately 5:45 p.m. The OIS incident resulted in the death of one individual and involved personnel from the Escondido Police Department.”

After being notified by local authorities, the DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team began its inquiry as required by AB 1506. According to the DOJ, once their investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent assessment.
