California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the California Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Richmond, California, on January 22, 2026. The incident, which occurred at approximately 7:20 a.m., involved the Richmond Police Department and resulted in the death of one individual.
The investigation is being conducted under Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506), which requires the DOJ to independently review certain police shootings in California. The California Police Shooting Investigation Team responded after being notified of the incident and has begun its investigation as mandated by AB 1506.
