California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that the California Department of Justice (DOJ) is conducting an independent investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on January 22, 2026, in Riverside, California. The incident involved deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office and resulted in the death of one individual around 10:00 a.m.

The DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team began its inquiry after being notified of the incident, as required by Assembly Bill 1506 (AB 1506). “Following notification of this incident, DOJ’s California Police Shooting Investigation Team initiated an investigation in accordance with AB 1506 mandates. Upon completion of the investigation, it will be turned over to DOJ’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division for independent review,” according to the statement from Attorney General Bonta.
