Travers Family Head Football Coach Tosh Lupoi has announced several new additions to the California Golden Bears men’s football coaching staff. The appointments include Bryan Barraza, Ryan Berry, Duke DaRe, Geoff McArthur, Pat McCann, and Ed McGilvra.
Barraza joins the team from Oregon, where he worked with defensive linemen and outside linebackers. Berry arrives after serving as a quality control coach at Syracuse. DaRe comes from Baylor, also in a quality control role. McCann was previously the wide receivers coach at Oregon State, while McGilvra served as defensive line coach at Sacramento State.
Geoff McArthur returns to Cal Athletics as an assistant wide receivers coach following experience coaching at both collegiate and high school levels. Most recently, he was the wide receivers coach at St. John Bosco High School.
“Under newly-named defensive coordinator Michael Hutchings and defensive line coach Darrion Daniels, Barraza will focus on the edges while McGilvra will serve as the assistant defensive line coach.”
During his time at Oregon, Barraza contributed to developing five 2025 All-Big Ten selections: Bear Alexander, Jadon Canady, Teitum Tuioti, Matayo Uiagalalei and A’Mauri Washington.
McGilvra’s tenure with Sacramento State saw his defensive line group record 32.5 sacks and 59 tackles-for-loss last season. The unit produced one first-team all-Big Sky selection and two second-team selections.
“Outside of coaching, McGilvra is known for his training of NFL talent. McGilvra hosts some of the top tier talent every off-season, including Khalil Mack, Aidan Hutchinson, Quennin Williams, Kenny Clark, Laitau Latu and more. McGilvra has a group of over 50 active NFL players that train with him over the offseason, including 16 former first round draft picks as a part of the group.”
McGilvra has coached at events such as the Senior Bowl and Shrine Bowl with three players earning MVP honors at the Senior Bowl during his time working with defensive lines.
“He has worked closely with NFL teams such as; LA Rams, LA Chargers, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans over the last decade to help them develop young undrafted free agents on their rosters.”
Duke DaRe will be an assistant defensive backs coach under Da’Von Brown and Connor Boyd after working for two years at Baylor as a defensive backs analyst. His background includes roles with both college programs and professional teams like the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders between 2018-2021 before moving into college football full-time.
Berry will support the defensive staff after most recently working with Syracuse’s secondary under Fran Brown; he has also held positions at Buffalo and Northern Illinois.
On offense, Pat McCann brings over fifteen years of collegiate coaching experience. He spent last season leading Oregon State’s wide receivers before previous stints at Fresno State—where he advanced to offensive coordinator—and Eastern Washington University.
At Fresno State in 2023 under his guidance as offensive coordinator (https://gobulldogs.com/sports/football/stats/2023), the passing offense ranked second in their conference while total offense was fifth overall that year.
While coaching Eastern Washington’s offense in 2021 (https://goeags.com/news/2022/1/10/football-eagles-finish-ranked-no-7-in-final-stats-perform-poll.aspx), his team led FCS in total yards per game (555.7) and points per game (44). Quarterback Eric Barriere received national recognition during this period for outstanding performance.
“Overall, McCann coached three All-MWC first team selections and one All-MWC second team selection with the Bulldogs.”
Geoff McArthur starts his Cal coaching career after setting multiple school records as a player: “McArthur… ranks as Cal’s all-time leader with 3,188 receiving yards… shares the all-time lead in 100-yard receiving games with 11… is second with 202 career receptions… seventh at Cal with 20 touchdown catches…” He remains notable for holding Cal’s single-season receiving yardage mark (1,504) set in 2003.
