The California Golden Bears men’s tennis team secured a 6-1 win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Hawai’i on Thursday, marking their second consecutive victory of the season. The Bears, ranked No. 15, improved to a 2-0 record while handing Gonzaga its first loss.
In doubles play, Lenn Luemkemann and Alex Aney gave California an early lead with a 6-4 win on court three. Timofey Stepanov and Fryderyk Lechno Wasiutynski clinched the doubles point for the second straight day by winning 7-6 (6-1) on court one.
Moving into singles matches with a 1-0 advantage, Fryderyk Lechno Wasiutynski extended the Bears’ lead by defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Alex Aney added another point with a straight-set victory of 6-3, 6-1 on court six. Tiago Silva sealed the overall win for California with a 6-4, 6-3 result on court one.
Leonardo Cattaneo contributed to the scoreline with a comeback win in three sets (2-6, 7-5, 10-8) on court five.
The order of completion for singles was courts two, six, three, one, four and five; in doubles it was courts three, two and one.
The Golden Bears will take a week off before hosting Cal Poly and San Diego State at Hellman Tennis Complex next Friday. They are scheduled to face Cal Poly at 10 a.m., followed by San Diego State at 4 p.m.
