The California Golden Bears men’s tennis team lost to No. 3 ranked Ohio State on May 2 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The match, held in Columbus, ended with a score of 4-0 in favor of the Buckeyes.
The result means that California, ranked No. 42 and holding a season record of 17-14, is eliminated from the tournament. Ohio State improved its record to 31-4 with this victory.
In doubles play, California competed closely but was unable to secure wins on two out of three courts. The Bears first lost on court two by a score of 4-6 and then dropped a tiebreaker on court three, giving up the doubles point to Ohio State.
Moving into singles competition with an early deficit, California surrendered points on courts one, three and four. Notable results included No. 11 Kim defeating Lechno Wasiutynski (6-1, 6-3), No. 32 Anthrop clinching against Silva (6-3, 6-2), and No. 95 Filin overcoming Munk Mesa (6-2, 6-3). Several other matches went unfinished as Ohio State reached four points required for victory.
The loss concludes California’s run in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
