The California Golden Bears men’s tennis team defeated North Carolina State University 4-1 at the Hellman Tennis Complex on April 3.
This victory is significant as it marks Cal’s first win over a top-25 opponent this season. The result improves the team’s record to 14-10 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while NC State drops to 16-4 overall and 8-3 in conference matches.
Cal started strong by capturing the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski and Tiago Silva won their match on court two, while Alex Aney and Timofey Stepanov clinched the doubles point with a victory over NC State’s No.11-ranked pair Borisiouk/Leroux. The win also marked Stepanov’s milestone of reaching his 100th collegiate victory.
In singles play, Lenn Luemkemann lost to Charlie Camus, giving NC State its only point of the day. Bernardo Munk Mesa then secured Cal’s second point with a straight-set win on court four. Stepanov extended Cal’s lead after defeating Jules Leroux in straight sets on court two. Finally, Lechno-Wasiutynski upset No.21 Martin Borisiouk to clinch the match for Cal.
Looking ahead, Cal will host No.3 Wake Forest at home on Sunday.
