The California Transportation Commission (CTC) has allocated $3.5 billion in funding aimed at enhancing road resiliency, promoting pedestrian and bicycle travel, and improving highway safety across the state. This financial commitment includes nearly $993 million sourced from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), known as the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, along with $944 million from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (IIJA).

Additionally, the CTC has awarded a separate allocation of $1.45 billion for new projects that will benefit from SB 1 funding over the next two years through to 2027. These projects focus on zero and low-emission transportation initiatives and infrastructure improvements designed to strengthen California’s freight network. This involves better connectivity between marine ports, railyards, and freight corridors.

The total investment of nearly $5 billion is part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s strategy to expedite infrastructure development across California. The plan aims to deliver significant upgrades while also generating thousands of jobs throughout the state.

Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized this approach by stating: “This historic investment will not only enhance our transportation infrastructure but also create good-paying jobs for Californians.”

California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin commented on the significance of these investments: “We are committed to building a sustainable future for all Californians by investing in safer roads, cleaner air, and more accessible transportation options.”

Darnell Grisby, Chair of the California Transportation Commission, remarked on the impact these funds will have: “These allocations represent a major step forward in achieving our long-term goals for improved mobility and environmental sustainability.”
