The California men’s gymnastics team will host the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championship at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley on April 2, welcoming Oklahoma, Stanford, and Air Force for the final meet of its season. The competition is set to begin at 4 p.m. Pacific Time with free admission for spectators.
This event brings together some of the top programs in collegiate men’s gymnastics. For Cal, it marks their fourth meeting with Stanford this year, third against Oklahoma, and second versus Air Force. A live stream will be available through Overnght and live scores can be followed on Virtius.
Cal’s lineup features redshirt senior Jasper Smith-Gordon, who aims to defend his conference vault title after breaking a decades-long drought last year. If successful, he would become the first gymnast in program history to repeat as vault champion. Senior Theodor Roald Gadderud holds more All-MPSF honors than any other Cal gymnast and medaled in both all-around and parallel bars at last year’s championship. Other key returners include Khalen Curry, Jaxon Mitchell, and Matteo Bardana.
Oklahoma enters under coach Mark Williams with nine national titles during his tenure and leads the nation by both overall score (331.600) and four-score average (326.833). Stanford arrives as NCAA runner-up under coach Thom Glielmi with five national championships in six years; their squad includes U.S. National Team members Asher Hong and David Shamah along with a strong freshman class led by Jun Iwai.
Air Force is ranked No. 13 nationally under coach Josh Loeser with standout performances from seniors Sam Brown and Jack Matlock on pommel horse as well as sophomore Jack Foltyn on parallel bars.
Individually for Cal, Smith-Gordon ended the regular season ranked first nationally on vault while Bardana achieved top marks on floor exercise and high bar—both earning CGA Regular-Season All-America honors this year.
On an international level, Gadderud represented Norway at several world events while Bardana helped Canada secure its first-ever medal at the FISU World University Games last summer.
The coaching staff features three alumni: new head coach Bryan Del Castillo—who previously served as assistant—and assistants Karl Ziehn and Donothan Bailey—all bringing experience from competing or coaching at elite levels.
