The No. 6 California men’s swimming and diving team delivered a strong performance at the Minnesota Invitational on Friday in Minneapolis, winning every event during the finals session.
Sophomore Yamato Okadome set a time of 50.48 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke, which stands as the second-fastest mark in program history and improves on his previous record of 50.62. His time is also the third-best in the nation for this season.
Okadome led a sweep for California in the 100 breaststroke, with Golden Bears swimmers taking the top four spots. In another event, senior Evan Petty won the 100 backstroke with a time of 44.83 seconds, placing him sixth all-time at Cal and ninth nationally this season. Freshman Casper Puggard finished second in that race.
California also secured the top four positions in the 400 individual medley, where junior Humberto Najera posted a winning time of 3:41.59. The team went first and second in both the 200 freestyle—won by junior Keaton Jones at 1:33.62—and the 100 butterfly, with sophomore Lucca Battaglini finishing first at 45.43.
The finals session began with a win for Cal’s 200 medley relay team—Battaglini, Okadome, Puggard, and sophomore Nans Mazellier—who recorded a time of 1:22.33. This result is currently sixth-fastest nationally this season and seventh-fastest ever for California.
In diving, junior Jack Clark achieved second place in the 1-meter event with a score of 342.15, which ranks as the fourth-best score in school history.
