California men’s tennis players fall in first round at NCAA Singles Championship

Two members of the California men’s tennis team were eliminated from singles play on the first day of the NCAA Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Sophomore Fryderyk Lechno-Wasiutynski experienced his second loss of the collegiate season. He was defeated by Mississippi State’s Benito Sanchez Martinez, who is ranked 11th nationally, with scores of 2-6 and 4-6 in the round of 64.

Senior Tiago Silva also represented Cal in singles. Silva lost to Devin Badenhorst from Baylor, who holds a national ranking of 17 and was seeded fifth in the tournament. The match ended with scores of 2-6 and 1-6.

Despite his singles loss, Silva will continue to compete in doubles alongside junior Timofey Stepanov. The pair is scheduled to play against Middle Tennessee’s Karim Al-Amin and Onrej Horak in Wednesday’s opening round. The match time has yet to be announced.
