The California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA) has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 Pet Lover’s Spay and Neuter Grant Program. The initiative is set to distribute up to $500,000 in funding aimed at reducing pet overpopulation across the state by supporting spay and neuter services. Eligible applicants include veterinary facilities registered with the Veterinary Medical Board and operated by a California city or county, as well as non-profit organizations in good standing with the Secretary of State.
Applications for grant proposals must be submitted electronically by 5:00 p.m. PT on January 5, 2026. Detailed instructions can be found in the Request for Grant Proposals document available online. A webinar providing an overview of the program will be held on December 16, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. PT.
In addition to grant applications, CDFA is seeking volunteers for its Technical Review Committee (TRC). This committee will review and evaluate funding proposals. Interested individuals with expertise in veterinary medicine, animal rescue, or shelter services are encouraged to apply by December 22, 2025.
The Pet Lover’s License Plate Program also supports this cause by generating funds through sales and renewals of special interest license plates. These funds are awarded annually to eligible organizations.
