On July 17, the LGBTQ support option on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline will end due to a decision by the Trump administration. In response, California is taking measures to enhance behavioral health services for LGBTQ youth. Governor Gavin Newsom and the California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS) have partnered with The Trevor Project to provide additional training for crisis counselors in the state.

This collaboration is part of California’s Master Plan for Kids’ Mental Health, aiming to offer evidence-based and inclusive crisis care. Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized the state’s commitment: “While the Trump administration continues its attacks on LGBTQ kids, California has a message to the community: we see you and we’re here for you.”

Kim Johnson, Secretary of CalHHS, reiterated this support by stating that “California will continue to show up for you with care, with compassion, and with action.” First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom also expressed her pride in California’s partnership with The Trevor Project.

Twelve call centers across California are staffed around the clock by trained crisis counselors ready to assist those in need. Specialized services for LGBTQ youth remain available through The Trevor Project hotline at 1‑866‑488‑7386.

The Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) underpins these efforts by offering targeted services through various community organizations. Additional resources like CalHOPE provide peer support and virtual behavioral health services accessible regardless of insurance or immigration status.

LGBTQ youth face a significantly higher risk of suicide attempts compared to their peers. Since its inception in 2022, the 988 LGBTQ+ “Press 3” line has connected over 1.5 million individuals in crisis.

For immediate help, individuals can call or text 988 at any time or reach out via The Trevor Project’s channels.
