Six members of the California men’s rowing team earned medals at the U23 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. Wilson Morton contributed to the United States’ gold medal win in the men’s four event. Pablo Moreno secured a silver medal for Spain in the same event.
In the men’s eight competition, Matthew Waddell won silver representing New Zealand. Noah Anger, Johannes Benien, and Maximilian Pfautsch helped Germany claim bronze.
Earlier this month, Angus Dawson and former team member Jack Robertson represented Australia at the Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames in England. They tied the course record of 5:53 to win the Grand Challenge Cup, ending Great Britain’s four-year winning streak in that event.
Morton and his U.S. teammates advanced to the A final by winning their heat and semifinal rounds. In the final race, they took an early lead over Great Britain and maintained it through a strong third 500 meters to secure gold. Moreno and Spain moved from third into second place during their race’s third segment to take silver.
In men’s eight action, Great Britain established an early lead. Waddell’s New Zealand crew finished second after a close contest with Germany and Australia at the halfway point; Germany ultimately held off Australia for third place.
Other Bears who competed included Jeremy Beale (Australia) and Xavier Gagnon (U.S.), who placed fourth and fifth respectively in men’s eight; Osian James (Great Britain), who finished fourth in men’s four; and Nat Gauden (Great Britain), who placed fourth in the C Final of men’s double sculls.
Full results from these events are available on official championship platforms.
