The California women’s soccer team secured a 2-1 win over Arizona on Sunday at home, moving their season record to 3-1-2. The Bears took an early lead just two and a half minutes into the match when senior Coco Thistle scored from outside the 18-yard box, marking her third goal of the season. Noelle Bond-Flasza provided the assist, her second this year.
California added another goal in the 27th minute from a set piece. Thistle delivered a free kick that led to freshman Elle Kivo heading in her first collegiate goal after Lumi Kostmayer redirected the ball upward inside the box.
Goalkeeper Teagan Wy recorded four saves in the first half, helping Cal maintain its lead going into halftime. Wy also stopped a one-on-one chance early in the second half.
Arizona responded with a goal by Lily Boydstun in the 59th minute but could not find an equalizer despite late opportunities. With less than a minute left, Cal defenders Reese Doherty and Olivia McPherson blocked consecutive shots inside their penalty area to secure the win.
Cal finished with an 18-13 advantage in shots and matched its season high with nine shots on target. The Bears have outshot opponents in five of six matches this season.
The team will next play Washington State at Edwards Stadium on Thursday at 3 p.m., with coverage available on ACCNX.
