The California Golden Bears women’s tennis team won five out of eight matches on the second day of the Cal Winter Invitational, held at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley. The annual event features teams from several universities.
Berta Passola Folch, ranked ninth nationally and an All-American, led California with a straight-set victory over Elif Tuana Gunal of Saint Mary’s, finishing 6-2, 6-2. Anya Murthy defeated Cal Poly’s Natalie Lynch 6-1, 6-1, while Mille Johanna Moerk secured a win against Candela Aparisi of Cal Poly with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles play, Passola Folch teamed up with fellow All-American Mao Mushika to defeat Stanford’s Caroline Driscoll and Monika Ekstrand 6-3. Moerk and Naomi Xu also recorded a doubles win for Cal by beating Stanford’s Tianmei Wang and Morgan Shaffer 7-5.
Other results included singles losses for Naomi Xu against Stanford’s Caroline Driscoll (2-6, 7-5, 4-6) and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg to Jessica MacCallum of Cal Poly (5-7, 4-6).
The invitational concludes Sunday with matches beginning at 11 a.m. PT.
