The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced on Mar. 9 the introduction of the California Agricultural Research & Innovation Roadmap, developed in collaboration with academic and industry stakeholders.
This initiative is significant as it aims to guide research priorities and foster innovation within California’s agricultural sector, which is a key contributor to the state’s economy and food supply.
The department supports an agricultural sector that includes over 69,900 farms and ranches producing more than 350 commodities, according to the official website. Its operations extend statewide through collaborations with county agricultural commissioners and sealers at more than 100 locations across California, as reported by the official website.
The department also works to enhance consumer awareness about the quality, value, safety, and stewardship of California agricultural products, according to the official website. It fosters partnerships with private industry, academia, and public agencies to adapt policies for evolving agricultural needs, according to the official website.
According to the official website, “the California Department of Food and Agriculture protects and advances the state’s agriculture by ensuring a strong food system and fair marketplace for its globally recognized products. The organization features divisions focused on animal welfare, food security, inspection processes, promotional efforts, standard measurements and pest control, while partnering across more than 100 sites with local officials. It bolsters a vast network of farms and ranches that produce a wide array of goods, solidifying the state’s role as a top agricultural leader.”
Looking ahead, CDFA said it will continue its efforts to protect a resilient food system while advancing an equitable marketplace for California-grown products renowned globally for their innovation, quality and sustainability.
