The California Department of Food and Agriculture announced on April 6 that it is accepting applications to fill four vacancies on the Fertilizer Inspection Advisory Board’s Technical Advisory Subcommittee.

The subcommittee acts as a scientific panel focused on the efficient use of fertilizing materials and irrigation water, providing guidance for research priorities and outreach efforts. This announcement matters because it seeks experts to help guide decisions that impact agricultural practices across California.

Applicants should have technical or scientific expertise in agronomy, soil science, plant science, irrigation, production agriculture or environmental issues. The department said subcommittee members serve three-year terms beginning January 1, 2027. While these positions are unpaid, necessary travel expenses will be reimbursed according to state rules. Those interested must submit an application packet and a two-page resume or curriculum vitae by July 31, 2026.

According to the official website, the California Department of Food and Agriculture receives support through state budgets, program fees and federal grants according to the official website. The department supports agricultural diversity and innovation in line with California’s multicultural farming community according to the official website, maintains operations at more than 100 locations statewide according to the official website, and collaborates with local agencies such as county agricultural commissioners as well as federal entities like the USDA according to the official website.

FREP—the Fertilizer Research and Education Program—is funded by a mill assessment on fertilizer sales. It supports research projects aimed at improving fertilizer use in agriculture for better efficiency and sustainability. FREP serves researchers, growers, extension personnel, public agencies and others involved in agriculture.

The department aims “to safeguard a resilient food system and promote an equitable marketplace, cultivating a California grown food supply that is globally recognized for innovation, quality and sustainability.” For more information about FREP or details about applying for these vacancies visit https://cdfa.ca.gov/go/frep.
