Charles Melton, an alumnus of the University of California, Davis, has been appointed to the UC Board of Regents. He will serve a two-year term representing over 2 million graduates globally. Melton graduated in 2008 with a degree in political science and begins his role as an alumni regent today.
“I’m honored to represent UC alumni and advocate for the university community that helped shape who I am,” said Melton. “This appointment is both a responsibility and a privilege. I’m committed to listening, amplifying alumni voices, and ensuring UC remains a leader in education, innovation and belonging.”
The UC Board of Regents reserves two seats for alumni representatives chosen by primary alumni associations at each campus on a rotating basis. The UC Davis Cal Aggie Alumni Association nominated Melton for this position. He follows Debby Stegura ’79, who served from 2019 to 2021.
Melton is known for his leadership at UC Davis. In 2020, he became the youngest and first openly gay president of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association, where he launched its first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. He also founded the Aggies Uncorked Wine Club to support student scholarships.
“Charles leads with heart, intellect and courage,” said Dana Allen, associate vice chancellor of alumni relations and executive director of CAAA. “His impact on the Aggie network is profound — from championing inclusivity and student support to building community in innovative ways. We’re incredibly proud to see him take this next step.”
Melton’s involvement with UC Davis began during his student years as a campus tour guide and Student Alumni Association board member. Known as Gunrock, the campus mascot during his senior year, he was recently honored with CAAA’s Young Alumni Award.
“UC Davis didn’t just educate me; it empowered me,” he stated. “It’s where I found my voice, discovered my purpose, and established a foundation upon which I have built my professional career and commitment to public service.”
Professionally, Melton serves as director of public policy and research at Turo, leading government relations strategies across several countries. His experience includes roles with Silicon Valley tech firms, the UC Office of Federal Governmental Relations, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Melton founded Sausalito Pride to promote LGBTQ+ representation in the Bay Area and volunteers with grassroots advocacy groups. He earned his Master of Public Affairs from UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy in May 2025.
Melton joins three other leaders serving as officers for the Alumni Associations of the University of California.
