California Attorney General Rob Bonta expressed satisfaction with a recent court decision that blocks federal agents from conducting unconstitutional stops during immigration raids in Los Angeles. The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California issued a temporary restraining order against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Attorney General Bonta criticized the actions of the Trump Administration, stating, “The Trump Administration is using federal immigration agents as a tool to instill fear and division in Los Angeles communities. In doing so, it is damaging community trust with law enforcement, disrupting Angelenos’ daily lives, and impeding public safety.”
He further highlighted concerns about the tactics used by federal agents: “The troubling use of masks, unmarked vehicles, and plainclothes to cover up immigration agents’ identities – and their own refusal to identify themselves when asked – has made it difficult to distinguish these agents from criminals.” According to Bonta, these actions have led to racial profiling and are unconstitutional.
Bonta emphasized his commitment to holding the administration accountable: “As California Attorney General, I will continue to fight to hold this President and his administration accountable to the law and to protect and defend California communities and their civil rights.”
Attorney General Bonta had previously led a multistate coalition in filing an amicus brief supporting plaintiffs in Vasquez Perdomo et al. v Noem et al. He has also taken legal action against the Trump Administration regarding its order involving the California National Guard.
