California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a significant legal victory with the District Court for the District of Massachusetts granting a preliminary injunction against certain provisions of President Donald Trump’s executive order on elections. This order, deemed unlawful by opponents, was challenged in court by a coalition of 19 attorneys general, led in part by Bonta, since April 2025.
Attorney General Bonta commented on the court’s decision: “Today, the court blocked the President’s unconstitutional attempt to interfere with states’ fundamental responsibilities to manage and administer our elections.” He emphasized the importance of voting rights as central to democracy, stating: “Nothing is more fundamental to our democracy than the right to vote. We will continue to fight to ensure the President’s anti-Democratic, anti-American attacks on voting are never implemented.”
The legal proceedings underscore ongoing tensions regarding federal versus state control over election management. The preliminary injunction represents a step in preventing parts of the executive order from being enforced while further legal actions unfold.
