California Attorney General Rob Bonta responded to a recent decision by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals regarding the federalization of the California National Guard. The court granted a stay on a temporary restraining order that had previously blocked the Trump Administration from using the federalized guard for law enforcement activities, pending an appeal.
Attorney General Bonta expressed disappointment over the decision but emphasized that the legal battle is ongoing. “While it is disappointing that our temporary restraining order has been stayed pending the federal government’s appeal, this case is far from over,” he stated. He criticized what he described as an overreach of authority by the Trump Administration in its efforts to deploy military troops within communities.
Bonta highlighted concerns shared by senior military leaders across multiple administrations about using military forces on U.S. soil, noting it should be “rare, serious, and legally clear.” He argued that such conditions were not met in Los Angeles, where local law enforcement managed isolated incidents effectively during otherwise peaceful protests.
Despite not securing immediate relief through the courts for residents of Los Angeles, Bonta remains confident in their legal arguments and committed to continuing their efforts against what he views as unlawful actions by the Trump Administration.
