A new leader has been appointed to spearhead Common Cause’s pro-democracy initiatives in California. Darius Kemp has taken on the role of executive director, where he will focus on enhancing government transparency, reducing the influence of big money in politics, advocating for people power, and bolstering California’s election system.

“I have loved policy and advocacy work since I was a teenager in the YMCA Youth & Government Program. I’m proud to join the Common Cause team and bring my passion for civic engagement to the organization,” said Kemp. “In my work, I’ve continually seen the impact that Common Cause has in our state, both in the legislature and out in the field assisting voters. I look forward to the work ahead, helping build a reflective, responsive, people-powered democracy that works for us all.”

Kemp hails from Birmingham, Alabama but has resided in California for 16 years. His career is marked by over two decades of experience in social movements and public policy with organizations such as the University of California Student Association and Working America.

Residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Kemp holds degrees from Alabama A&M University, University of Birmingham, and UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy. He also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica.

“As we advance pro-democracy reforms in California, we aim to be a beacon for the nation. We know the critical role our state serves as a policy leader, paving the way for a fairer, more inclusive democracy,” stated Russia Chavis Cardenas, Deputy Director at Common Cause California. “We are thrilled to have Darius leading the way… especially during this time of national instability.”

Before joining Common Cause, Kemp was head of social equity at Eaze Technologies where he led initiatives generating significant revenue for small businesses and influencing drug policy across several states.

Outside his professional commitments, Kemp enjoys Afrofuturism literature, culinary exploration, travel experiences with his dog Biscuit.
