Eric Grant has been sworn in as the Interim United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California. The ceremony was conducted by Chief United States District Judge Troy L. Nunley.
Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Grant to begin his service on August 11, 2025. Grant is a longtime member of the Department of Justice, having worked in Washington, D.C., as an Attorney-Adviser in the Office of Legal Counsel from 1991 to 1993 and later as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) from 2017 to 2021. In his role at ENRD, he managed over one hundred litigators working on behalf of the United States and its agencies on both civil and criminal cases.
“I am honored to rejoin the Department of Justice to lead an excellent team of lawyers and other public servants in our shared mission to enhance public safety and the rule of law in Northern California. I look forward to working with that team and with our federal, state, local, and tribal partners in law enforcement and otherwise to accomplish that mission,” U.S. Attorney Grant said.
Grant also brings extensive private practice experience from Washington, D.C., and Sacramento, including arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court, California Supreme Court, and various federal and state courts.
He previously clerked for Chief Justice Warren E. Burger (retired) and Associate Justice Clarence Thomas during the Supreme Court’s October 1994 Term. He also served as a law clerk for Judge Edith H. Jones on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
A Modesto native who raised his family in Sacramento County, Grant attended the University of California, Berkeley, earning degrees in economics (1986) and law (1990).
The U.S. Attorney acts as chief federal law enforcement officer for the Eastern District of California, which covers 34 counties across Central Valley and Sierra regions—from Oregon’s border southward to Los Angeles County line—and leads an office comprising 72 attorneys plus 61 non-attorney staff based in Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield.
