EVA Air announced on May 2 the introduction of its fourth-generation premium economy seat, which allows for an eight-inch recline without impacting the passenger behind. The airline unveiled this new design in February 2025 at Evergreen Aviation Technologies Corporation’s facility in Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
The development is part of EVA Air’s efforts to improve passenger comfort and remain competitive among airlines offering upgraded seating options. EVA Air was the first carrier to introduce premium economy in the early nineties, aiming to bridge the gap between coach and business classes.
The new seats feature a cradle motion recline mechanism that enables simultaneous forward and upward movement of the seat cushion. According to EVA Air: “The cradle motion recline mechanism allows the seat cushion to slide forward and upward simultaneously, creating a comfortable recline equivalent to 8 inches (20.3 cm) while preserving space for the passenger behind.” Additional features include side panels for privacy, leather upholstery, armrests with storage compartments, footrests, high-resolution widescreen monitors measuring 15.6 inches, device holders on tray tables, and power outlets for each passenger.
Currently available only on select Boeing 787-9 aircraft operating routes such as Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport to Jakarta in Indonesia, these seats are expected to appear on more routes as additional aircraft are delivered through a broader fleet renewal program. Reviews have noted that the new configuration offers spaciousness similar to older business class layouts. Ben Schlappig from One Mile At A Time said: “Seeing premium economy with 42 inches of pitch almost makes it reminiscent of business class back in the day.”
Ticket prices for these upgraded seats reflect their enhanced features; return fares between Taiwan Taoyuan and Jakarta start at NT$13,369 ($423.75), compared with NT$7,597 ($240.80) for standard economy class tickets as listed by EVA Air in late April.
