A federal grand jury has indicted Christian Banuelos, a 30-year-old former teacher from Los Banos, on charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and receipt and distribution of child pornography. Acting U.S. Attorney Kimberly A. Sanchez made the announcement.
Court documents reveal that between July 8, 2022, and November 15, 2023, Banuelos allegedly used a minor to create explicit visual content. Additionally, from December 9, 2019, to August 22, 2024, he is accused of receiving and distributing child pornography.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations in collaboration with the Central California Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Los Banos Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brittany M. Gunter is handling the prosecution.
If found guilty of sexual exploitation of a minor, Banuelos could face up to 30 years in prison with a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and fines reaching $250,000 per count. For receipt and distribution charges, he faces up to 20 years in prison with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years along with similar fines. Sentencing will be determined by the court based on statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines after conviction.
The charges against Banuelos are allegations at this stage; he remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
